Straight to the Moon
Wandering Stars
Dear friends,
When we left Odysseus at the
end of the Leo chapter, he had just made it ashore after 20 days at sea and
collapsed in exhausted sleep covered in leaves. And then begins chapter 6.
While Odysseus sleeps, goddess Athena in disguise
appears to the daughter of the king of the island in a dream. Curiously, Athena
doesn't inspire her to seek out a shipwrecked warrior, nor to sound any alarm,
but instead ... to do the laundry! "Let's go wash these clothes at the break of
day - I'll help you, lend a hand, and the work will fly!" Now why would a
princess be dreaming about washing clothes? Homer's first clue is still in the
dream: "Look at your fine clothes, lying here neglected - with your marriage not
far off, the day you should be decked in all your glory." Clue #2: "You won't
stay unwed long!" We get hint after hint - when the princess awakes she talks to
her father about going to wash the clothes, but is “too shy to touch on her
hopes for marriage, young warm hopes.”
If princess Nausicaa is unwed, as Homer has made
abundantly clear (5 separate times in a few paragraphs), could she be a virgin?
Probably. Yes. Of course!
The princess and her friends do the laundry near a
river and then play around, and their noise wakes Odysseus. He is a frightful
sight, covered in 20 days worth of sea grime and matted hair covered in dirt and
leaves. He pleads for help. Nausicaa holds steady and hears him out, and thanks
to his wits and smooth delivery she gives him clothing and food after he cleans
up. She then directs him to the palace of her king father and queen mother, but
asks him to wait a while before following behind because she wants to maintain
her pure reputation.
We see the stereotypes of purity and cleanliness, but there is
something deeper going on. At the moment when Odysseus appears to Nausicaa, he
is a wreck. She easily could have bolted. The strength of Virgo is to be
steadfast in the face of a mess, because Virgo knows everything can be improved.
This is an important skill to have, say, as a doctor in an
emergency room. Or any other health professional, or a person working in a
business with the task of making something work that isn't.
Another interesting point in this chapter is that
Nausicaa isn't a virgin simply because she is being prudish; she is definitely
aiming for marriage, and soon. Virgo is the sign that prepares for relationship,
not just avoids it.
When I first read the Odyssey more than a year
ago, this chapter was the Eureka moment. Even after the first 3 chapters I
suspected there was a lot of astrology, but when we get to the Virgo chapter and
Homer introduces a virgin soon to be married who does the laundry and in the
process finds Odysseus and has him cleaned up, I was absolutely convinced. I
hope now you are too!
Keep in mind that the true meaning of Homer's
tales has perplexed readers across cultures and centuries, and now you know the
secret: it's about the zodiac and our experience of life as it follows this
archetypal path! The Odyssey is astrology!

Sun * in Virgo. With the Sun in the sign of purity we will want to
clean inside and out, toss the trash, shape up and get something done.
This year with Mercury traveling alongside the Sun we have the very best of
Virgo. The usual catch of Virgin energy: too much criticism! The Sun also has a special influence on Sundays, Wednesday nights and all Sun
hours. For planetary days and hours at your location (highly recommended!),

ChronosXP.
Moon * First Quarter Moon in Sagittarius on Thursday 8/31.
Monday 8/28 * Moon in Libra, into Scorpio 12:55 pm. With the supremely positive
Jupiter trine Uranus early tomorrow, you could be feeling lucky. New directions
ahoy!
Tuesday 8/29 * Moon in Scorpio, Mars square Pluto.
Whatever the silly scientists say, Pluto most definitely exists. To demote him
making Neptune king of the hill will just make Pluto hell bent on revenge. See
for yourself around 4:30 today - do the words intense, charged, excruciating,
driven, violent, traumatic, beyond taboo, sexually potent describe at least some
of your experience or thoughts? You probably won't kill your boss or force
yourself upon him either, but some days you might feel like it. Otherwise a very
positive day, especially earlier in the afternoon.
Wednesday 8/30 * Moon in Scorpio. Virgo knows how
to clean up, and this year we have an extra strong drive to purge. This will be
emphasized in various ways in the next few weeks; today is one of those days. If
you don't really want or need it, it goes!
Thursday 8/31 * First Quarter Moon in Sagittarius,
Saturn opposite Neptune, Sun conjunct Mercury. 2 biggie transits in just one
week; we go from the exuberantly possible Jupiter Uranus to the more hopeless
no-way-out of Saturn opposite Neptune. Dreams may be dark and we wake with
foreboding. The mind wants truth so here's a book for the week: "The Wisdom of
No Escape" by Pema Chodron.
Friday 9/1 * Moon in Sagittarius, Venus trine
Pluto. Not the lightest of summer weeks. While the Mars Pluto aspect on Tuesday
emphasizes physical rawness, the Venus aspect today will bring out Pluto's
potential to go beyond usual limits in the realm of desire. An image of the
energy tonight: making up after a fight by f#cking.
And that is Pluto's idea of it.
Saturday 9/2 * Moon in Sag, into Capricorn 7:30
am. OK, here's the deal with aspects - they blend. We think of Saturn being in
Leo, but thanks to the opposition to Neptune Saturn is becoming a blend of
Neptune in Aquarius. What does this mean for you today? Instead of being just
fixed on oneself, you might be more likely to experience community. Instead of
tangible luxury, you may opt for intangible ideals.
Sunday 8/3 * Moon in Capricorn, Mercury opposite
Uranus and sextile Jupiter. A day for brainstorming if there ever was one. If
you are off from work projects, go to a bookstore and read something from a
section you usually don't. For the inspired mind, there are connections in
everything.
Have a stellar week!
Peace and love,
Jonathan Pearl

Wandering Stars - the planets
Mercury * in Virgo. The ultra
sign for Mercury - our minds can get so much done in the realm of practical
accomplishment. Virgo wants to see the improvement and notice the results. If they
aren't there, we'll criticize until they happen! Mercury in Virgo through
September 12. Mercury is especially active on Wednesdays, Saturday nights and
all hours of Mercury.
Venus * in Leo. Venus in Leo loves to be
noticed, adored and above all, loved. If she's not getting at least some praise,
and better declarations of utter love and commitment for life, then she'll think
something is amiss. And as the story of the lioness a couple columns back
demonstrates, disloyalty is *not* tolerated. Even though Saturn in Leo is
casting a gray cast to the most colorful of signs, still will be more flair in
fashion and gold to boot. Whereas Venus in Cancer may be the subtle rose, Venus
in Leo is the must-be-noticed stargazer lily. Venus sweetens Fridays, Monday
nights and all hours of Venus.
Mars * in Virgo. Drive to accomplish, improve,
purify, and in particular this last week, purge. Men will be eating right and
extra health conscious. Mars in Virgo through September 7. Mars has more bang on
Tuesdays, Friday nights and all hours of Mars.
Jupiter * in Scorpio. Now direct, so we see more
outer results of inner work done the past few months. Jupiter in Scorpio blesses therapies, healing modalities,
joint finance arrangements and amplifies our sexuality. Jupiter wants to do
good, but in Scorpio functions by responding to others with some kind of attack.
The energy: This might hurt, but it is for your own good and my own protection!
Great regeneration and power is possible if we find the positive side of our
deepest emotions. Jupiter here also benefits Aquarius (by antiscion) and sister
water signs of Cancer and Pisces. Jupiter in Scorpio through November 2006.
Jupiter blesses Thursdays, Sunday nights and all Jupiter hours.
Saturn * in Leo. Developments in some long term structures in
life are moving forward, but concrete Saturn moving into an opposition with
destabilizing Neptune. This is a major aspect and will set the tone for
everything else later this summer and on into 2007. More in a column coming
soon. Saturn in Leo through September 2007. Saturn
stabilizes Saturdays, Tuesday nights and all Saturn hours.
Dragon's Head * in Pisces. We advance towards peace, arts and spirituality, and
partnerships are also a must. Without the sweet embrace of love, substitutes can
be not just an occasional indulgence but a routine.
Dragon's Tail * in Virgo. As placements go, this is a bit tough. The Dragon's
Tail is like the tai-chi master doing quiet movements but little else. How does
this function in the sign of accomplishment through detail & perfection? We let
go of ways we are unnecessarily restrictive. Hard work is a virtue, but unless
guided by a Pisces wholeness will never bring us true peace.
